States now must report undocumented immigrants to DHS or risk federal funding, DOJ says

* DOJ now requires all state agencies receiving TANF/SSI funds to report undocumented immigrants * States risk losing federal funding if they fail to comply * Opinion applies only to future cases, not past enrollments The DOJ revised its 1998 opinion, requiring all state agencies-not just specific ones-to report known undocumented immigrants when receiving TANF or SSI funding. Noncompliance could result in loss of federal funding. The rule applies only prospectively, and all 50 states, DC, and U.S. territories participate in the programs.
