AI stocks bounce back after bruising selloff, CoreWeave gets Goldman upgrade
• AI stocks rebounded Monday as bond yields fell and CoreWeave rose after a Goldman Sachs upgrade
• Chip stocks including Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Micron bounced after last week's steep selloff
• Upcoming megacap tech earnings seen as next test for AI trade amid valuation and debt concerns
AI-linked stocks rebounded Monday after last week's selloff, helped by falling bond yields and easing oil prices. CoreWeave rose 2.4% after Goldman Sachs upgraded it to "buy," citing tight computing capacity and a buying opportunity after the stock lost a quarter of its value last week on concerns over its $50 billion debt load. CoreWeave's 2031 bond yield eased to 15.13% from above 16%. Rival Nebius jumped 3.4%, while data center operators Applied Digital and IREN gained 8.5% and 5%. Analysts cautioned the bond market remains skeptical of financing continued AI buildout without demanding higher yields. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, down over 11% last week, rose 2.4%, on track to snap its longest losing streak since 2008. Intel climbed 4.5% after a JPMorgan upgrade tied to agentic AI demand, while Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and Micron also recovered part of last week's losses. The selloff was triggered by a hot inflation reading that raised rate-hike bets, stoking fears over borrowing costs for indebted AI firms. Morgan Stanley projects AI investment reaching $1.6 trillion in 2027 and $1.8 trillion in 2028. Upcoming earnings from Meta, Tesla, SpaceX and chipmakers are seen as the next test of whether AI earnings growth justifies current valuations.
