Nasdaq 100 Stocks Add Nearly $500 Billion As Chips Battle To Snap 2008-Style Rout
• Semiconductor stocks rebounded after an 8-session losing streak that erased 15.74% from the PHLX index
• Nvidia, Micron, TSM, SK Hynix and Broadcom led gains, adding over $270B in chip market value
• Selloff was tied to rate-hike fears and AI financing doubts, not weak chip demand; Intel upgraded by JPMorgan
Semiconductor stocks snapped an eight-session losing streak on Monday — the first such run since the 2008 financial crisis — as buyers returned after a 15.74% drop that left the PHLX Semiconductor Index nearly 24% below its June record. The index jumped 3.1%, lifting the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) and pushing the Nasdaq 100 up 1.4%. Nvidia added $73.7B in market cap, followed by Micron (+4.22%), TSMC (+2.10%), SK Hynix (+5.47%) and Broadcom (+2.17%). Sandisk and Western Digital, among last week's hardest-hit names, jumped 7.3% and 5.3% respectively, while CoreWeave rebounded 3% after losing a quarter of its value the prior week on surging junk-bond yields. Analysts say last week's selloff stemmed from inflation-driven Fed-hike fears and questions over AI financing, not weakening chip demand. Cantor Fitzgerald's C.J. Muse said semiconductor equipment makers are "effectively sold out," with customers locking in orders two or more years out — ASML said some clients are already booking 2029-2030 capacity. Intel shares rose nearly 5% after JPMorgan upgraded the stock to Neutral, ending a bearish call that dated to 2022. Lam Research and Texas Instruments report earnings Wednesday.
